She had designed an activity to engage students in learning about the Dewey Decimal System by "ordering" books using a menu, but spin-offs quickly emerged.

Today, the most common iteration is to set up the library like restaurant with books to "taste" as a way to hook students on choosing pleasure reading titles. The special touches of a place setting, placemat, tablecloths, menus, and other details create an ambiance conducive to reading and a feeling of ownership over one's book choices.

I've done variations of Book Tastings over the years because it's a great way to promote books, encourage students to take time to read into a book, and make reading feel like a special activity.

But what I REALLY love about Book Tasting is the anecdotal evidence I gather while the students are busy reading.

While the students read silently at their tables, I watch them like a mama hawk.

I'm watching to gather evidence about each one as a reader. What I learn about each child during the Book Tasting helps me connect him or her with books throughout the school year.

I learn...

which students can get into the flow of reading quickly

who struggles to keep their focus

which students flip right to the end

which students drift from the page quickly

which genres grab their attention

which students like lots of white space

which students are willing to take a risk on an usual book

which ones like a challenge

which ones read fast

Book choosing behaviors I see...

starting in the middle

smelling the pages

reading the first page and looking at the cover again

reading the blurb and moving on to something else

reading the blurb and telling a friend about it

flipping to the end to read the last page

These little bits of personal information about students' reading behaviors and preferences go into my mental file. When a child comes to the library, I pull up my memories of the Book Tasting and use the information I gathered to suggest books that will fit with what I saw that day.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; We always end each day by filling the empty display spaces. Since we were doing that anyway, I figured, let's COUNT how many books are coming off the displays each day.

For a week, we did a daily count of our empty display spaces and compared it to our circulation data. We discovered that 35-40% of our circulation came from displays. This was true on days with high circulation from a class coming in AND on days when circulation was lower.

With this clear evidence of the importance of display space, I decided to see if I could maximize the display space even more.

Shelves "too empty", via Kevin Hennah

I remembered an off-hand remark Kevin Hennah made about the shelves in another library - shelves that looked like mine, half to three-quarters full of books.

He said, "There's way too much space on those shelves."

I remember thinking, "Huh? Acronyms! Do's and Don'ts! Domains matter - actually, they don't. Wikipedia is trash - actually it's a gold mine.

We've evolved in our fact-checking abilities as information has become increasingly fed into our personalized feeds and misinformation has become increasingly sophisticated.

Inspired by other librarians, I've been teaching evaluative "moves" rather than focusing on fixed items to look for in a source. It's much better.

The moves include strategies like lateral reading and reading upstream.

But there's been a step of the evaluation process that I've missed, and that is: When is Source Evaluation necessary and how do I know?

Until students internalize that answer for themselves, my teaching is incomplete.

The answer for when to use evaluation "moves" isn't simple:

Do I evaluate everything I come in contact with?

Do I evaluation only if I have a doubt about the information?

Do I evaluate information I agree with?

Do I evaluate based on the purpose of my information task? (schoolwork vs. personal entertainment vs. things posted to my feeds?)

Answers might be determined by...

Time (I don't have time to check this)

High Investment (I'm re-sharing this so I want to check it)

Low Investment (I'm just watching for fun, so I really don't care)

Prior Knowledge (I've been to this site before and already vetted it)

The shortest answer and most teachable point is that the student must choose when to implement evaluative moves and that choice needs to be INTENTIONAL.

Acting on an intentional choice is empowering. So I try to help students identify their internal critical thoughts in the first few seconds of seeing new information.

One label I'm using is "Alarm Bells"

Where are the places on a webpage that might set off an alarm in your head?

We draw sample webpages and star places where our eyes might quickly encounter an alarm bell.

No author?

Unfamiliar organization?

Date updated/created?

Secure URL if we're shopping?

Monetized via ads?

Listening to these alarms is the beginning to listening to our inner critical voice and making decisions about when to use evaluation moves.

<img border="0" data-original-height="1056" data-original-width="1876" height="275" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0lNRe0rSd94/YG0gFdqAStI/AAAAAAABVZI/zHCK4iTPQQI_j_k0yGMLITD9ED1wvjoTwCLcBGAsYHQ/w489-h275/Screen%2BShot%2B2021-04-07%2Bat%2B10.59.15%2BAM.png" title="SIS student's page with "alarm bells"" width="489" />

This is just one step in the process to internalize the Source Evaluation process. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Our Middle School is offering student workshops related to various tech and information and organization skills.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here are the documents I used, thanks, as always to the amazing librarians out there who share their work so widely.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Boolify - a puzzle-type interface that shows how different filters impact a google search
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Google-a-Day home page - a new puzzle every day
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Google-a-Day Lesson bank - past puzzles with slideshow answers
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Padlet with Google-a-Day challenges
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">My remix of that Padlet with the answers

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I linked the activities into a Bitmoji Classroom (feel free to copy and edit) and shared it with the students.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Workshop Steps:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">View the boolify video or demo it "live"

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Explain the extra search tips (truncation, wild cards, and "reading" a search string)

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Define "stacking searches" (using the answers from one search to search again and build toward an answer)

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Assign Zoom breakout rooms + google puzzles from the Padlet (10 minutes)

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Regroup and share "Yays & Nays" (what worked and what didn't)

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Share the daily google challenge page for those interested in playing on their own

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This was a 45-minute workshop that seemed to go very smoothly!

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">For this version of Musical Chairs, everyone always has a spot, but gradually people leave the game as they find a book they'd like to read longer. In each round, they have two books at their place to review and read for about 4-5 minutes.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When the music is ON they dance around the area in one direction. When the music STOPS they sit at the nearest spot and read.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I needed 24 places to sit, one for each student, so I did 20 bean bags in parallel rows with two chairs on each end to 'contain' the scene.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I didn't use only chairs because I felt students might choose to leave the game just to go sit in the bean bags. This way, if they decided to leave the game (yay, with a book!) they'd be choosing to leave their bean bag to go sit in a regular chair.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">(I'm probably overthinking, but it's always all about the bean bags!)
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here's a slide with the directions. The Spotify logo clicks over to a "Summer Reads" playlist.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This activity is super fun the first time, but probably not great to repeat over and over. Still, it was easy to set up, the kiddos enjoyed it, AND, best of all, many went home with one of the books I picked out!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Some details:
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">We played three rounds which allowed time for free-range browsing and checking out at the end.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When someone exited the game, I added another title to their spot from a backup stack, so the whole thing took 72 books (48 to start + another 24 as backup) plus more for other classes.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I did the activity for all grades who wanted to come and pulled books of various levels within that age band (middle grade or young adult).
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Titles at each spot were paired to be appealing to a boy or a girl. (In general, I find that girls read anything and boys don't usually choose "girly" covers).
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
A couple of weeks ago, I was planning a lesson with our grade 9 Science team on source evaluation. In middle school, I had taught students the CRAAP model but now wanted to take them to the next level: to help them listen to their own instincts and push toward more critical thinking rather than checklists.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">With high school students, I have been introducing the idea of evaluation "moves" - actions we take to verify, question, and critique a source.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
I found John Green's Crash Course, "Navigating Digital Information," particularly helpful and now talk about active evaluation skills, such as lateral reading and reading upstream, as an extension to the CRAAP model.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">But I was looking for a new tool. Something that would provide structure to students as they work through the process of choosing sources but encourage them to dig deeper than a checklist.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Enter, Linda Hoiseth, via Twitter!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Linda is a librarian I have admired from afar for her thoughtful and innovative work in research skills with students. Although we've never worked together, we have been Twitter pals for many years and I've learned so much from her.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Just as I was stuck in mid-planning mode, she posted this grid that reenergized my approach. She calls her process "Inside/Outside."
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
It provides guiding questions to help students evaluate what's within a source and what can be found beyond the source. She focuses attention on four areas: Authority, Bias, Content, and Date. A final category, Evaluation, is completed at the end.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">1) Students work in small groups on a particular topic
I’ve been using ABCD rather than CRAAP for several years, particularly with middle school students, because I like its simplicity (and it doesn’t make them giggle). Each time I approach the topic with students, they repeat outdated messages about site evaluation that they’ve been taught: “If it’s a .com it’s bad but a .org is good,” “It has ads, so it’s unreliable,” etc., and I know that we have to move them beyond that simplistic thinking. Mike Caulfield’s SIFT post was enlightening to me, and I wanted to incorporate his ideas into my teaching. We asked the students to look at all of the websites they will use for their project with this critical lens, so we didn’t require them to fill in every box on the evaluation form. If they find something that tells them immediately that a site is unreliable or not useful for their purposes, they should just move on. Likewise, if they already know about the site or it is recommended by a teacher, they only need to gather enough rationale to complete their annotation.
My hope is that this process is quick enough that it isn’t onerous and simply becomes part of their thinking whenever they encounter websites. Let’s be honest: I don’t fill out a checklist whenever I approach a new website, but I do think about who is behind the site and what their bias is and whether or not the content is backed up elsewhere. Ultimately, I want my students to do the same."

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Going forward, I like the idea of teaching source evaluation skills as "moves" - actions we take versus viewing a source passively and trying to glean its value from what it presents about itself. I like the ownership and power we experience as researchers when we actively fact-check and seek different perspectives.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
So now, with Linda's ABCDE Inside/Outside chart and the SIFT tool, I have two ways to guide students in the source evaluation process. By using both, students will begin to internalize the "moves" needed to become independent evaluators, not dependent users of a checklist or acronym to remember.

Elementary school librarian and fountain of creative ideas, Shannon Miller, recently shared an idea she uses with teachers to generate excitement around reading picture books called "You've Been Booked!"

The concept: A bag of books travels around to various classrooms and when it arrives, the class stops what they're doing and READS the books in the bag.

For our Middle School, I wanted to do a Halloween version. I picked Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (in English and Spanish), read the stories myself, and tabbed the ones I thought would be the most fun. I made some notes ("Gross!" or "Ghosts" or "Very short") to help teachers choose quickly.

Teachers signed up a week ahead on this document. At the start of Halloween week, I print the teacher list and include it with the books, so the class can see where to send the books next.

Today is the first day. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Every library I've worked in has a "usual crew" - a group of students who consider the library a home base at school. They come every day, sometimes multiple times.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I understand why they come; it's for all of the same reasons I choose to work in libraries myself. The library feels safe, expansive, private, and social. It feels personal and inclusive. It's a mix of many feelings that add up to: "I want to be here."
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">My personal challenge as the librarian is to create a climate in the library that expands the numbers of the "usual crew."
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I love the regulars and I want more of them.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Right now, after four years together, we have a lot of regulars. On an average morning, almost 200 middle and high school students fill up every chair, bean bag, sofa, pillow, or square of laminate flooring available.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Many elements keep them coming (and perhaps this post is the start of a series of ideas on those) but today, I'm grateful for the simple strategy of our weekly whiteboard prompt as a way to welcome and continue to attract teens to the library.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">At the beginning of each week, I write a question or prompt on the large whiteboard at the entrance of our library. Throughout the week, students (and teachers) chime in with their ideas. When we also housed elementary students, I changed the prompt daily because it got so filled up. But now, with only middle and high school students, the responses come more gradually and even, sometimes, more thoughtfully.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As I watch them pour in each morning, I love to see their faces light up (or smirk, or grimace) as they read the latest responses. Invariably, the notes interact with each other and the collective responses become a kind of community.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This week, it has been foggy in Lima (STILL).
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">So, o<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">n Monday, I wrote: "Talk about the sun."
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In response, we've got diagrams, odes, encouraging words, and a dose of snark ("Good luck seeing it in Lima").
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Each week, the board captures the fun, the depth, the wisdom, the wonder of Teen Thought. I love to see what they come up with, and I think they love having a place to contribute their ideas.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">No problem.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I can talk about genres in fun ways, mingling in book talks and making the genres all sound super cool.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">But still.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It's just listening on the students' part. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I've played around with it before but this was my first time using it with students.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I set up three stations.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">At each one:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">a stack of books for each genre (Realistic Fiction, Historical Fiction, Adventure)

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">a pen and note-taking sheet

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">a Chromebook set up to a Flipgrid video task

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Each station was designed to take 20 minutes (a bit tight!)
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Directions:
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">1) Become familiar with the genre. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Review the books on the table, brainstorm and take notes on the elements of the genre, and share favorite titles in that genre.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">2) Plan and create a video advertisement for that genre. All group members must be in the video. The video must "sell" that genre as "the best." Video cuts off after 3 minutes. The elements of the genre must be clearly featured.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">It sounded like a pretty tight plan to me, but in my vision, the group stayed at their table, quietly <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">talking<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"> into the laptop to film.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Exploding into other parts of the library to build a mountain out of the beanbags wasn't what I pictured.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">What happened?
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The minute students found out they would create a video, they started spinning out all kinds of wild and creative ideas. The adventure group wanted to create their ad in the style of an adventure - plane crash survival! The realistic fiction group wanted to sob their way through a sad story.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">It became crazy very quickly! Also: seeing themselves on camera induced fits of giggles!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Happily, the teacher is a laid-back guy and we tamped down the volume as needed. I thought the results were going to be way off-topic based on the amount of action compared to information there seemed to be.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">However, when I viewed the videos later, I was, for the most part, surprised to see that the kids pulled it off! Maybe I'd like to hear a bit more about the elements of the genre next time, but overall they got the gist. And the enthusiasm! It was great.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">At first I planned to limit the next groups to staying in their seats for filming, but after seeing the creative responses to the task, I decided to let them continue to branch out. I did assign them filming areas further apart to help noise control. And I gave them more concrete time limits: 10 minutes for notes, 5 minutes to plan, 5 minutes to film.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Another thing: Before uploading the video, the kids take a "selfie" which becomes the-most-important-thing-ever. A friendly reminder to keep track of their time at this stage helps.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Flipgrid for the win - I just need to be ready to manage some of the silliness! It might bring out the crazy but it's worth it for the high level of engagement.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">PS: Flipgrid is FREE for educators.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">You create a Grid and then add Activities (like tasks) within the Grid. Students will need to input their school email (with school domain) in order to access.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">A work-around for this: have the computers open to Flipgrid and already logged into your own account. The videos will publish as if they are from you, but the kids take a selfie before posting, so they will be able to see which ones are theirs. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This skips the whole logging in and inputting a code.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Anyone else have tips on how to manage the silly factor or logistics of Flipgrid?Sarah Ducharmehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03612961825419653408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6909678040880425212.post-2135613175579979872017-09-26T14:12:00.000+02:002017-09-26T14:40:44.674+02:00Dewey Tweak: 800s<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I love tweaking Dewey and my latest reshuffle happened in the 800s.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Mr. Dewey liked the literature section to be organized largely into regions. This makes sense for some works but not for others. P<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">eople looking for "Antigone" expect it to be where the other "Greek" works are. But m<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">ost students looking for poetry don't differentiate between "American" or "British" poetry. They just want poems. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Same thing for plays and essays.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So, my 800s Dewey tweak organizes most literary pieces by type with some sections organized by region (Greek and Spanish/Latin American Lit).
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Here's my planning document. I tried to keep numbers the same as the original Dewey when possible, but the entire "Plays" section needed to be relabeled. You can make a copy of the doc and edit as you like.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">These are our section signs:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">General Literature

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Poetry

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Plays

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Literature Appreciation

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Shakespeare

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Spanish & Latin American Literature (We're in Peru, so this is a large section)

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Other Literature

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">In the Spanish & Latin American section, we have all types of literature and criticism written in Spanish. These will stay together according to their original Dewey number + SP for "Spanish". So, a book about Shakespeare in Spanish will be in this section, not the Shakespeare section.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">At least for now.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Some books don't fit neatly into my new categories, but I guesstimate based on where I think a patron will hope to find them and remember that we still have the catalog to find things.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here's a video to give a sense of how it looks when finished:
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I'm behind in my independent reading!

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I'm a big fan of reading calendars to help students plan their reading time and to give them ownership over their reading goals.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The key aspect of the calendar: it shows what PAGE students should be on for each day. That's better than just knowing how many pages to read per day because if they get behind, the calendar shows their page target for catching up. And if they are ahead, they can see by how much!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This is also a fast way to teachers to see how independent reading is progressing.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here's a template to use.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Copy and customize however you like.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The directions:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Take the number of pages in the book

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Divide by the number of days to finish

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Add the resulting pages-per-day to each subsequent day on the calendar

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">For example: if the pages-per-day is 15, the calendar should look like this:
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Another important aspect of the calendar is taking the time to gauge the READING PACE for a new book.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Students start their new books with a timed reading of 5 minutes. This gives them a sense of how long it will take them to read their pages-per-day. If the time seems too long, they might choose to adjust the number of days for finishing.

One of my favorite tweaks is for the Graphic Novels section.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">"Graphic" books are cataloged in Dewey with the number 741.5 which is the number for comic art. But Mr. Dewey didn't anticipate that SO many wonderful fiction books would be written in graphic form, so most librarians pull their 741.5 section and put it near the fiction books.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">We did that too, but now we've gone a step further and changed the 741.5 label to GRA (for "graphic"). Next we sorted our graphic books by type. We've added a line to each label to show what type of graphic book it is.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here's our system:
